First Look. |
Advantages: |
Chocks and ladder both welcome accessories; chocks easy to assemble; clear and simple instructions. |
Disadvantages: |
Not really a disadvantage, but the photo-etched ladder will challenge less experienced modelers. |
Recommendation: |
Perfect for adding a touch of authenticity to your finished 1/48 British aircraft, or further detail to a more complex diorama. |

Brengun’s range of 1/48 accessories is an interesting mix of aircraft-specific and generic detailing sets. The last group includes a wide range of items such as weapons improvements, gunsights, and fuel drums, as well as wheel chocks for German, Soviet and British World War 2 aircraft.
The British wheel chock set also includes a ladder, and looks deceptively simple in its compact bagged packaging – two resin parts, one photo-etched fret and a small instruction sheet. The resin parts are the chocks, which should be simple enough to remove from their common casting block and clean up for painting. Casting appears to be perfect. According to the instructions, the chocks can either be kept as single units, or joined by a photo-etched strip to create a single unit that – judging by the photographs on Brengun’s website – will fit the wheel span of a 1/48 Spitfire.
The ladder will be more complex to finish, and is probably only suitable for modelers who are experienced users of photo-etch. It is made up of 16 individual photo-etched parts, which will need to carefully glued at the correct angles to obtain a convincing result. I would strongly recommend using a jig to assist with assembly, as I think it could be difficult to get everything lined up properly without one. Fortunately, Brengun has used a comparatively thick sheet of brass to produce the etched parts, so these shouldn’t suddenly fold up on you when you are gluing them together. The assembly instructions are also very specific about which parts go where, and should be followed closely. Carefully built and painted, the ladder will look excellent.
This set is perfect for adding a little touch of detail to your finished 1/48 British aircraft, or providing further lift to a complex diorama.
Highly recommended.
