Squadron/Signal's "Walk Around" series might just be the perfect format for scale modellers. As a breed, we are hungry for detail, often skimming many books in search of the perfect photograph for a particular aspect of our modelling subject.
The "Walk Around" series addresses this hunger with a lavish feast of photographs in a concise package. "B-26 Marauder Walk Around" is no exception.
David Doyle's B-26 Walk Around is presented in landscape format with 80 semi-gloss pages between its soft cardboard covers. The vast majority of the book is presented in full colour.
The book wastes little time on body text, permitting the photos and captions to carry the narrative. A page of text covers the history of the aircraft from its design in 1939, to its final production. Succinct summaries of the specific variants are also provided throughout the book.
A full page of profile drawings covering the variants and an attractive overall shot makes way for the detail. The majority of the images offer multiple views of museum aircraft. The book is arranged logically by aircraft type. Specifcially covered are a restored B-26-MA, a B-26, a few detail shots of B-26B "Flak Bait", an ill-fated B-26C that crashed in 1995, and several examples of the B-26G. The photos cover all important elements of the aircraft both inside and out - engines, airframe, undercarriage, cockpit, turret and gun positions, interior, bomb bay and much more. Indeed, I am told that this title contains the only interior photos of a fully restored Marauder published anywhere.
All the images are generally quite large, with fine detail clearly visible.
David Doyle's captions reflect his long experience, providing insights into the operation of the aircraft and drawing attention to subtle points of interest. They add genuine value to the excellent photos.
The photos are accompanied by Don Greer's attractive artwork on the front and back covers, and several colour artworks inside. The last page of the book is a spectacular full-colour wartime photo of an early B-26 under construction.
David Doyle's B-26 Marauder Walk Around wil be an essential photographic resource for anyone interested in modeling the B-26 Marauder in any scale.
