Eduard's 1/48 scale MiG-21 Wheel Wells are available online from Squadron.com
The MiG-19P introduced the first “limited all weather” variant equipped with the “Scan Odd” radar in a lengthened nose. The MiG-19PM ‘Farmer D’ varied from the P as they removed the cannon armament and added 4 AA-1 Alkali Air-Air missiles.
It is this radar equipped nose that has caused an issue with the Trumpeter kit. While I do not have access to the Trumpeter kit, a quick search of built models compared to online images of actual MiG-19PM’s reveals that the Trumpeter nose tapers too much over the entire length. The actual nose is almost uniform in cross section until just before the radar. This is where S.B.S Models steps in.
This aftermarket resin is packaged very nicely in a sturdy cardboard box with the contents sealed within a plastic zip lock bag and wrapped in bubble wrap.
The kit contains very nicely cast, bubble free resin with minimal clean-up required once removed from their casting blocks. The error in the Trumpeter nose is very noticeable. The main resin, the nose, is very well cast; with no casting block and handy locating tabs it looks to be an easy replacement. It is designed to take either the kit cockpit or the S.B.S. Model cockpit, your choice. The only difficult task looks to be the cutting of plastic. Dimensions are provided on the instructions however, it does not look to fall on a panel line, so measure twice and cut once.
The nose wheel well is moulded separately for two reasons; it makes the nose mould easier and allows for greater detail. Once removed from the casting blocks the two pieces are joined and slide into place.
The final resin part is a pitot probe.
This looks to be a great aftermarket addition that will make your Trumpeter MiG-19PM look authentic; great detail make this an easy recommendation.
The S.B.S Models resin set is essential to make an accurate MiG-19PM.
My thanks to S.B.S. Models for the review sample www.sbsmodel.com
