Background
The fairly recent release by A-Model of its Vampire Mk.1 and Mk.6 kits has prompted Pavla to come up with some accessory sets for these. In most cases the Mk.6 sets will also be suitable for use with earlier Frog and Heller/Airfix FB.5 kits, although the Mk.6’s ejection seat should not be used with these versions.
Pavla are well known for their extensive range of resin seats, detail and conversion sets, vac-form canopies. (They seem to have dropped their range of limited run aircraft kits). They have adopted a sensible and welcome approach to aircraft accessories by frequently offering different degrees of enhancement for the same kit. This is the case here, with the option of full cockpit set and canopy, or just a pair of seat s and/or a canopy.
The Sets
All of the resin is cast to high standards with some fine detail evident.
The cockpit sets are both nicely done, with instructions that include paint call-outs, which is a welcome feature.
The vac-form canopies will allow the cockpits to be shown off to full effect. The Mk.1 offers the choice of early 3-piece or later 2-piece styles shared with the Mk.6. Each comes moulded in its separate pieces. This may cause you to have the canopy open, as multi-piece vac-form canopies do not always look the best when closed.
The wheels and jet pipes are nicely done. It’s a while since I saw an A-Model Vampire. I cannot recall if there was a problem with the wheels, so I assume the wheels and jet-pipe set are just intended to enhance appearances over the kit parts.
If you’re on a budget, or don’t need so much detail, you can buy just the applicable seat and/or the canopy separately. As noted on its header card, the Martin Baker MK.2 ejection seat is also suitable for use with DH Venoms.
The photos tell their own story. So I have little to add here, other than to say that the set will be a big improvement over the kit parts.
These sets are very welcome improvements for the A-Model Vampires, or indeed other brands of styrene Vampire kits as well. I like the way Pavla offers a graduated approach to improving a kit, with both full cockpit sets as well as simpler seat-only or canopy-only options, plus of course the wheels and jet-pipe sets.
Definitely recommended.
