This is the Wingnut Wings 1/32 scae Hansa Brandenburg W.29.
It was one of the six new model kits issued by Wingnut just before last Christmas and is finished OOB, although I substituted Wingnut’s suggested brand of grey- blue paint with a colour from the Foundation ( Citadel Paints) range.
Like the other kits in the Wingnut family this one is state of the art with minimal complications and an outstanding full colour 28 page instruction booklet which becomes in itself a standalone reference for this unusual aircraft and any model of it. A very careful study of the instructions will make for an easier build.
The subject of these markings was stationed at Zeebrugge in August- September 1918. The kit features five marking options ( Cartograf decals) including alternate parts for the prototype machine. Some nifty trestles and beaching gear accessories are also included.
The Wingnut Hansa Brandenburg W.29 is an ideal candidate for those wishing to get into WW1 models but wary of top wings and struts and rigging. As a monoplane, construction is straightforward, the aircraft has minimal rigging, and the float struts are engineered to remove any alignment hassles.
The cockpit interior detail makes for a model in itself, but some of the detail is lost when the fuselage halves are joined. Similarly the Benz 150hp engine is a showpiece in itself. I wish I had left off the engine cowls to best display it.
The model was brush painted using Foundation’s Astronomican Grey and the Clear Doped Linen undersurfaces were finished with a home made blend of OOP Humbrol enamels.
The prop was given a wood effect with Winsor & Newton Burnt Umber rubbed over a base colour of Foundation’s Ivanden Darksun then overcoated with Tamiya clear yellow and a touch of clear orange.
Wingnut Wings' 1/32 scale Hansa Brandenburg W.29 is an outstanding model, on a par with the state of the art standard we have come to expect from Wingnut Wings and yet another affirmation that WW1 modelling is enjoying a new Golden Age.
There’s a feeling among many WW1 modellers that Wingnut has single handedly revolutionised the hobby but while the WNW people themselves don’t make that claim, they do acknowledge they have brought many new modellers into the WW1 genre.
