AIMS from the UK has obviously always had a soft spot for the Junkers Ju 88, with several full kits, conversions, accessories and decal sheets released over the years in 1/72 scale.

The affection has now spread to 1/32 scale with a new range of decals, accessories and conversions for Revell's new 1/32 scale Junkers Ju 88 A-1.

One of these releases is a 1/32 scale Junkers Ju 88 C-2 conversion comprising two parts in cream coloured resin.

The C-2 was the first production Zerstorer (heavy fighter) variant of the Ju 88 family. It was effectively a conversion of the Junkers Ju 88 A-1, so it shared that type's unique early tail planes, engine nacelles and short wing tips. The C-2 also saw service as the first Ju 88 night fighter.

AIMS supplies the two most distinctive features of the Ju 88 C-2 - the solid nose and the revised front of the gondola. Both parts are nicely cast with no pinholes or other imperfections evident on my sample.

The resin parts are both solid so the modeller will have to make a choice. If you wish to add full gun cradle and weapons detail, you will need to hollow out the resin nose. However, none of this detail will be visible through the canopy, so I will simply drill the gun ports a bit deeper and add some machine gun and cannon stubs as required.

Both parts feature fairly chunky casting blocks. I find a Dremel fitted with a grinding wheel is the easiest and fastest way to deal with this type of casting block, but make sure you wear a mask as it will kick up a lot of potentially carenogenic resin dust.

The Ju 88 C-2 featured several additional characteristics including large ammunition boxes on the starboard side of the cockpit and gas ejection ports in the faired-over port side window. The modeller will need to add these features from scratch.

AIMS' 1/32 scale Junkers Ju 88 C-2 conversion will be welcomed by modellers wanting a different look for their new Revell kit. An all-black night fighter would certainly be a change from the otherwise relentless RLM 70 / 71 / 65 finish of all other Ju 88 A-1s, and the cannon nose is quite distinctive.

This will be a relatively straightforward conversion for modellers with some previous multimedia experience.

Thanks to AIMS for the samples
