Alley Cat is producing a nice line of conversion kits to covert kits to display esoteric research and experimental models of the aircraft variant.  This Meteor U.15 Drone conversion is available in either 1/72 or 1/48 scales, and kit contains 5 resin parts and 9 photo etched parts plus one decal sheet.

The resin parts are crisply cast and beautifully detailed and no air bubbles are apparent in the castings.  The resin parts comprise the wing tip pods and the various telemetry antennae.  The 1/72 scale conversion is designed for the MPM Mk.4 kit while the 1/48 scale conversion is designed to modify the Classic Airframes Mk.4 kit.  The conversion set also has a very comprehensive decal sheet with five options offered.  These include aircraft from the RAE, Royal Navy and the sole version used in RAAF markings although it was not RAAF registered.

All aircraft are fitted with long range belly tanks fitted to the fuselage and markings are provided for five aircraft as follows:

  • WV280 Meteor U.15 was used by the RAE Llanbedr in 1959.  This aircraft is finished in BS381C:537 Gloss Signal Red lower surfaces and BS381C:356 Gloss Signal Yellow upper surfaces with Black wing tip pods.

  • RA479 Meteor U.15 was used by the RAE Llanbedr in 1960.  This aircraft is finished in BS381C:537 Gloss Signal Red lower surfaces and BS381C:356 Gloss Signal Yellow upper surfaces with Black wing tip pods.

  • VZ415 Meteor U.15 was used by the RAE Llanbedr in 1960.  This aircraft is finished in BS381C:537 Gloss Signal Red lower surfaces and BS381C:356 Gloss Signal Yellow upper surfaces with Black wing tip pods.

  • VT330 Meteor U.15 was painted in RAAF markings but retained its United Kingdom serial numbers and did not have an Australian ‘A’ number allaocated.  This aircraft was used at Woomera Australia in 1962.  This aircraft is finished in Gloss White with BS381C:537 Gloss Signal Red trimmings and Gloss White and Black wing tip pods.

  • RA375 Meteor U.15 was used by 728B NAS of the Royal Navy based at Hal Far in Malta in 1960.  This aircraft is finished in BS381C:537 Gloss Signal Red lower surfaces and BS381C:356 Gloss Signal Yellow upper surfaces with Black wing tip pods

The decals are printed by Fantasy Print Shop and are crisp, accurate in colour and in register.  They look to be very thin and should conform well to the surface detail, but they will have to be handled carefully.

This is a relatively simple conversion set and is recommended for any modeller due to the relative simple installation of this kit.
