Hasegawa's big 1/32 scale Ki-61 is a beauty from two perspectives.
On the one hand, it represents an outstanding and well proportioned aircraft, on the other hand the model convinces in the terms of detail, fit and logical kit planning.
From the three option offered I chose a rather weatherbeaten Ki-61 flown by Sgt Maj Iwao Tabata from the 39th Training Squadron /Yokoshiba in March 1945.
The model was basically built out of the box, with the exceptions of brake lines made from copper wire and the addition of seat belts by Eduard. The gun barrels have also been drilled out.
I used Gunze acrylics for the camouflage colours. The aluminium was done with Alclad “White Aluminium”.
The chipping was achieved by a coat of masking lacquer randomly applied with a small sponge on the aluminium basecoat. After the application of Gunze H 60 “IJA Green”, the masking was removed to uncover the aluminium surface on the intended positions.
Kit decals where used.
