Description

Here are some photos of a model that I actually finished today, Tamiya's 1/48 scale Fi 103 - the dreaded V-1 Flying Bomb..

Okay, so it wasn't the most ambitious project I could have tackled but it was just the thing for getting me back down to my basement and getting some modeling done after some time away from building. I hope this sets a trend for 2008!

The kit itself was simple enough but took me a little more time than I was expecting as there was more cleanup than I would have expected from a Tamiya kit on the cart mainly associated with sinkholes. I believe this is due to the simplified design of the cart as this kit was also designed to be sold as an accessory in the Meteor kit. This problem was easily overcome and the end result looked very good with not much effort on my part when done.

The model was built stright from the box with only a replacement brass pitot tube. The blades on the front of the nose were removed and replaced after the model was painted to avoid damage.

The model was painted with Polly Scale paint and applied with a badger 150 freehand. The cart was weathered with silver Rub n' Buff applied with a toothpick and several applications of powdered pastels. The kit decals settled down perfectly after a coat of Polly Scale gloss was applied. The kit was finished up with a dark gray sludge wash and a final coat of Polly Scale dullcoat.

I had been in a bit of a modeling rut and Tamiya's Fi 103 was just the thing to get me building again. If you have hit a "dry patch" and need a simple kit to get you going again than this is the kit for you!
