Vintage Fighter Series P-47D Thunderbolt is available online from Squadron.com
Vintage Fighters Series' 1/24 scale P-47D Thunderbolt is a nicely moulded kit but very big (the parts size suit my eyesight).
It is basically easy to assemble, featuring a well detailed engine and accessories, and has a choice of floors in the cockpit, flat or corrugated. You get three types of gun sight but you provide your own seat harness.
Flaps come separate but I fitted mine raised as the hinges are a little difficult to use. There are detailed gun bays in each wing and a choice of empty or loaded ammo trays in the port wing which can be displayed open.
The fit of the parts in general is good but this was an early production run kit and a number of alterations have been made to improve a few minor glitches in the next batch of kits.
The instruction sheets have some mistakes in the numbering of parts etc. but the manufacturers are aware of this and are addressing the problems most of which will be obvious to most modellers and just need a little thought before assembly.
On the whole the model seems pretty accurate with a fair amount of detail but at this size there is scope for the super detailer to perform his magic.
There are markings in the kit for two US aircraft and two British, plus a French Air Force machine. The decals are by Cartograph and have good solid colours and perfect register, plus they are very thin and conform to the shape of the underlying surfaces.
Of course, I chose the RAF scheme but the others are also attractive.
I enjoyed building Vintage Fighter Series' 1/24 scale P-47D Thunderbolt but I won’t be buying another as my house isn’t big enough for two of them!
