I am just a car modeler, but I have always admired the work of the many fantastic aircraft modelers that are in the model club I like to call home. Seeing the works of Bondo Phil, Milton Bell, Greg Springer, and at one time Floyd Werner has always been a treat. My airbrush skills were very Spinal Tap... crank it to 11 and flow the gloss. I would marvel at the fine feathered edges of the aircraft camo jobs these guys would create. Hoping to help a past member of our club I picked up the Master Class Clinic #1 Building the Bf-109G-6 with Floyd Werner, Jr. DVD set. Wow, what a great teacher Floyd is. I watched it and found myself saying "I can do that" Car modeling had gotten stale and I was suffering from a bit of the AMS. Building a few aircraft has given me the itch to work on a few of my first loves again. If you are in a rut maybe a change of pace will help you also.
I was going to follow Floyd's DVD including the subject but while researching, I found this aircraft that caught my eye. I'm sure I will be Experten fodder here but my understanding is my model is Blue 11 a BF-109G-14 from Operation Bodenplatte. This aircraft appears to be pieced together from several airframes in order to get many birds in the air. The thing that caught my eye was the different camo schemes on the wings one being soft edged and the other very jagged. It also has a replacement engine cowl and a different elevator. The sides of the aircraft appear to have older unit markings painted out with RLM 79 sandgelb.
My car subject are usually multi-media so I love the smell of resin in the morning. I could not resist some after market items for my 109. I used a Meteor Productions cockpit, Eagle Editions spinner and supercharger intake. The seat belts are Eduard's pre-painted items. I used the Parts-R-Parts nose correction and True details wheels. Decals are pulled from several sheets but I could not find any Blue 11s so I bought some white decal sheet and cut the backgrounds then painted some of the sheet blue and cut them small enough to fit inside the white borders.
I had a blast trying something different and I can not recommend the Master Class Model Building videos enough.
Thanks folks, Tim
