Teknics has released a range of conversion and correction sets for Trumpeter's 1/48 scale F9F-2/-2P Panther kits. These include nose correction sets for both the F9F-2 and F9F-2P kits.

The biggest benefit of these replacement noses is that they correct the shape of Trumpeter's kit nose.

Both sets are very simple to prepare and to install. I have already removed the casting blocks from my -2 nose, and glued each half to the Trumpeter fuselage halves. Removing the casting block was a breeze, taking all of about 30 seconds each. The thin resin strip holding the part to the block was simply cut off with a razor saw, then the locating gap in the ridge was cleaned out with a sharp hobby knife.

The resin nose halves were attached to the Trumpeter's fuselage parts with super glue. The fit on both sides was superb - no steps or gaps.

I also test-fitted the fuselage halves to chech alignment between the two hollow resin nose parts. These lied up almost perfectly, with only a narrow gap at the top join. This will easily be eliminated with Milliput during construction.

I will probably tone down the rivets on Trumpeter's fuselage with Mr Surfacer and a few passes with sandpaper to match the more subtle detail on Teknic's resin parts before proceeding with further assembly

The F9F-2P set will be almost as simple. The extra parts are cameras and lenses, plus a replacement side camera window.

Trumpeter's 1/48 scale Panther kits will greatly benefit from these simple correction sets.
