Here is my 1/72 scale Spitfire Mk.XII.
I built this model about 8 years ago. This model represents a No. 41
Squadron aircraft based at Westhampnett, England in September of 1943.
The main components are from the Hasegawa
1/72 scale Spitfire Mk. VIII kit which includes the wings, fuselage,
rudder, main gear struts, tail wheel, canopy and other miscellaneous
parts.
The engine cowling (from approximately
the firewall forward), spinner, and propeller blades are from the
Minicraft Spitfire Mk. XIV kit. The prop and spinner were changed to a
4-blade configuration and the blades were reshaped to the correct
profile and diameter for this early Griffon variant.
The port coolant radiator was removed and
replaced with an earlier, circular oil cooler from a Revell Germany
Spitfire Mk.V kit. I also used the 5-spoke main wheels and the landing
gear covers from the Revell Germany kit.
The proper style exhaust stacks are from
a Fujimi Spitfire F Mk.XIV kit.
The upper center fairing on the engine
between the cylinder banks and the squadron code decals are from the
Model News Spitfire Mk. XII kit. The rest of the markings are from the
stock decals included in the Italeri Spitfire Mk. IX kit.
The cockpit interior is a Cooper Details
Spitfire Set with many additional scratch-built parts added (most of
which are just about impossible to see).
The cannon barrels were scratch-built
using fine brass tubing. I added a scratch-built intake ice guard and a
beam approach antenna. The coolant and oil radiator grills were also
scratch-built. The elevator tips were rescribed to the correct, earlier
profile.
I custom mixed most of the colors and
lightened them slightly for scale effect.
