This kit provides three firsts for me:
-
First civil aircraft
attempted
-
First model on the net,
and
-
First time using
Hannants' Xtracolor enamels
The kit is the Minicraft 737-300 and the decals are from
Sky Decals (SKY14034).
The paints used were X316 (Simpson's Yellow), X137
(Thrifty Blue) and Alclad Polished Aluminium.
Normally I build WWI biplanes so I was grateful that the kit went
together quickly and without any problems. By folding a piece of paper
and slotting it through the fuselage wing slots ( very hi-tech) I was
able to safely hold the airplane while it was painted.
The yellow was sprayed on a low compressor pressure and
thinned to a mixture of 50 percent thinner. Using my trusty Paasche
airbrush, several light coats were applied over a couple of hours then
left overnight to dry.
The next day an anti static cloth was used to polish the
model up and prepare it for the decals.
The wings and engines were built and painted separately
and at this point I discovered that Xtracolor was a great base coat for
spraying Alclad.
I am one modeller who will be saying goodbye to acrylics
as I found these paints to dry to a rock hard, shiny finish and cleaned
up very easily.
I know that we don't see a lot of airliners on
HyperScale but I hope that you will enjoy seeing this unusual model as
much as I enjoyed building it.
