Messerschmitt Bf 109 V4

Classic Airframes' 1/48 scale Messerschmitt Bf 109 A  is available online from Squadron

Introduction

This is Classic Airframes 1:48 Messerschmitt Bf109A, kit #4123, finished as the V4 prototype W.nr.878.

I can add nothing enlightening or constructive to what has already been said about this kit other then that it was a dream from start to finish.

Construction

I added the following detail to my Bf 109 V4:

  • I riveted the airframe using Model Design Construction’s 1:48 riveting tool and guide. I also employed my “Rosie the Riveter” riveting tool in some areas.

  • Formation/navigation lights replaced with ones from CMK set #7031.

  • MG17 cowl machine guns replaced with resin ones from Aires.

  • Landing gear detailed with lead wire and Grandt-Line plastic bolts. I also hollowed out the tail wheel yoke.

  • The carburetor intake was hollowed out and it’s lip thinned with a Dremel motor tool.

Painting and Markings

After much research I decided to paint my V4 prototype in rlm 63. The airframe was primed with Mr. Surfacer 1200 and preshaded with Tamiya Dark Gray. I used Vallejo acrylics for my color coat. Base color is #886 Green-Grey. I added #884 Stone-Grey and #986 Deck Tan to the base color to high light panels.

Future was used under and over the decals. Final clear coat if Floquil flat-finish (lacquer based). Though labeled as “flat” in reality is dries to a satin, waxy like finish. I feel it’s perfect for a “scale” gloss finish.

The figure is from the Jaguar set #GD-48006, WWII German Fighter crew. Again Vallejo acrylics were used.

My meager painting skills do not do justice to the superb sculpture work of Mike Good.

Conclusion

Just a beautiful job by Jules Bringuier and Classic Airframes on a beautiful aircraft.
