Here is my attempt at Tamiya's 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4/7.
This is the first 109 that I have built. I must admit that 12 months
ago I didn't have any Bf 109's in my collection. A quick count the other
day revealed I now have about a dozen! Maybe it's the variation in
colour schemes and markings.
I don't know but they have certainly got into my blood.
I built the kit pretty much straight from the box. There are two
reasons for this. First, I don't have any real reference on the early
Messerschmitts and second, I wanted to see if I could build a decent
looking model without adding a bunch of aftermarket parts. Apart from
drilling out the gun barrels and adding the aerial wire, the only other
addition to the kit was an Ultracast seat.
The kit itself went together beautifully with the only filler being
used on the underside rear of the wing to fuselage join.
The kit was painted using White Ensign Models enamel paints, with
details painted in Humbrol.
The stippling effect was achieved by dabbing and light scrubbing
using a cut down paint brush. I then put a brown wash in the panel lines
with artisit's acrylics. The kit decals were fantastic and were as good
as any aftermarket ones I have used. They reacted well to the
Superset/Sol treatment.
The model was finished off with a coat of Testor's Dullcote.
This model was photographed at the ACT Scale Modellers' Society
Annual Competition held during May 2004 in Canberra, Australia's
national capital.
