Introduction

Frontier is headquartered near my home and I dated a Frontier flight attendant for a couple of years so I wanted to build one of their fleet of brand new Airbus A319 airliners.

Construction

I was going to use the 1/144th Revell A320 and convert it into the smaller A319 when Revell released a new kit of the A319 in BA markings, so I used it instead and dumped the A320 on eBay.

I planned on using decals for the windows so all the windows were filled with resin, primed and sanded flush. It took a considerable time to make sure that they were perfect. The dorsal satellite antenna was scratch built based upon extensive photographic references. A set of Platz photo etched antennas were also used.

Painting and Markings

The aircraft was primed with Cobra Colors “Moon Mud” high build primer and was then finished in Cobra Colors Ford Crystal White, Model Master Canadian Voodoo Gray and Tamiya British Green. Gloss white is probably the toughest color to paint so I was nervous about it. After doing some research I used Cobra Colors automotive lacquer, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It went on smooth, even and rock hard. It is available over the internet at http://cobracolors.com/ . The aircraft was then decaled with a liberal mixture of Liveries Unlimited and Daco stencils and Decales de Guido markings. The Frontier text on the fuselage sides were cut from silver trim film and applied individually.

Once I got the windows filled it went fairly smoothly. There are a couple areas where I’d do it a little differently next time, but I’m very pleased with the results. It was my first airliner, but it won’t be my last.
