This is the Revell/Monogram Heinkel He 111 in 1/48
scale.
Although I planned for this to be an out-of-box
project, it quickly grew beyond that. Aftermarket parts included the
Koster resin exhaust stacks, resin wide-chord props, new spinners, metal
guns, new clear parts (nose blister/pilots fairing, sliding dorsal hood,
ventral gunners window) also from Koster. The cockpit includes parts
from Eduard and True Details resin. The control surfaces are from KMC,
the wheels are from True Details, and decals are from Aeromaster.
Paint was from Model Master and weathering was done
using an umber wash in the panel lines and a fine, stiff wire to apply
paint chips.
Apart from committing every modelling sin thinkable
(I even decided that I wanted to drop the flaps after I had
assembled and attached the wings! Yikes!!), I really enjoyed building
this plane.
The project took a year to complete, on and off -
although it shouldn't have taken that long.
Special thanks to Roy Long for his help and
expertise on Luftwaffe subjects, and to Helmut for sending a couple of
great reference photos showing He 111's carrying two 1000kg bombs (most
references show only one in an asymmetric loading).
