A-36 Apache

by Ian Robertson

A-36 Apache

Accurate Miniatures' 1/48 scale A-36 is available online from Squadron.com

Introduction

The A-36 "Apache" was a P-51A modified for use as a dive bomber by the USAAF. Extendable dive flaps were integrated into the wings but were usually wired shut because their use in flight resulted in instability problems. My model is of an A-36 from the 27th fighter-bomber group stationed in Corsica in July 1944.

The Model

Accurate Miniatures' 1/48 A-36 is somewhat unorthodox in design yet it goes together with little difficulty. The additions I made were etched metal seatbelts, vacuform canopy (center section only), and weighted resin tires from True Details (with the bulges reduced in size).

The model is painted in Olive Drab over Neutral Gray using Polly Scale acrylics. The yellow wing bands were also painted on. The antenna is stretched sprue.
