This is a model of Fairchild’s T-46 Eaglet trainer in 1/48
scale.
It was scratchbuilt from Renwood using similar techniques as
described in my piece on the Jet Mustang.
I cheated a little by using the ACE ejection seats and
landing gear from a 1/48 scale T-37. The canopy was vacuformed
from a section that was cut off of the model after the fuselage
was shaped.
This was the last aircraft made at the Fairchild factory on
Long Island, NY. This same factory produced the P-47
Thunderbolt, the Thunderjet series and the A-10 Warthog. Two
preproduction aircraft were made in the mid ‘80s but the
contract to provide a replacement aircraft for the Cessna T-37
never materialize and Fairchild quickly faded from the military
market place.
