North American P-51D Mustang
by Fred List
Here is Tamiya's 1/48 scale P-51D Mustang. After reading (then re-reading), Bud Anderson’s biography "To Fly and Fight" I was highly motivated to build his late-war P-51D "Old Crow". Anderson was officially credited with 16.25 kills in World War 2, and was the third highest scoring ace in the 357th Fighter Group.
Since the Mustang was the premier fighter in the USAAF arsenal and I hadn’t built one before, I wanted to do it right. I decided to dress up the Tamiya kit without altering the profile by opening the cowling or gunbays. Instead I obtained the Aries resin cockpit and wheelbay sets, the Teknics brass landing gear, the True Details wheels and Moskit metal exhausts.
That’s about $45 US, more than twice what the kit cost(!), but for this important aircraft I thought it worth the price. My thanks go out to Franck for the decals, and Jim Anderson and his terrific website http://www.cebudanderson.com/ which was an invaluable source of information.
