Republic P-47D Thunderbolt by Brian Criner
images by Brian Criner & Gary Zuercher
This is the 1/48 scale Republic P-47D Razorback kit from Hasegawa. The model was built as a part of a project by some modellers here in Southern California. Last year six of us built Tamiya Corsairs representing VF 17 for the model show at Planes of Fame museum in Chino. This year, the project is a 4th FG P-47. Rules for last years contest were that the models be built out of box. The guidelines for this years "build" allow for some modifications (resin cockpit, photoetch etc) but no major body work.
Additional parts included KMC resin bombs, various Eduard photoetched pieces, a resin cockpit from KMC, metal landing gear from Teknics (I think), True Details wheels, syringe tips for gun barrels and decals from Aeromaster. Weathering was done with a wash of Grumbacher artist oils, some touch-up painting with the airbrush and fine wire dipped in Testors silver and twirled across the surface.
As an interesting side note, I actually completed this model in the markings of the 318 th FG last summer. I had decalled the model and started the weathering process when I decided I just didn't like the way it had turned out. Out came the thinner and sand paper and wham-o: Down to the plastic!
