This beautiful aircraft challenged the F-105 in a
USAF competition for an attack plane.
Unfortunately the choice fell on the F-105 even though the F-107 was
undoubtedly better in many respects.
This 1/72 scale model is a mixture of the VAMI Models resin kit and the
ESCI/ITALERI KIT.
The VAMI kit is rather difficult to assemble because
the resin is deformed. Using the wings and tailerons from ESCI's kit was a
great help.
Flaps are always extended downward in pictures of the
real aircraft so they were cut-off and repositioned. Many panels above the
wings were also re-engraved.
The landing gear was taken from the ESCI model and
modified according to pictures of the real aircraft; while the wheels of
the main landing gears come from an Italeri YF23.
The model was painted with Humbrol Metal Cote on a glossy Azure base,
coated with Gunze clear gloss and finished with red/orange. Decals come
from different sheets dedicated to USAF in 1/72.
In the end this was very hard work in an ocean of
filler!
