Dora Wings' 1/48 scale
Vultee Vengeance

by Daniel Sauter

Vultee Vengeance

Description

This is my build of the Dora Wings 1/48 Vultee Vengeance Mk.II finished as a USAAC A-31 training aircraft in July of 1943 prior to transfer to the RAAF.

Aftermarket used on the kit was a 3D printed engine from Resin2Detail, Eduard Steel seat belts, Master Models .30 caliber gun barrels, and custom masks made by a local friend.

I originally intended to use the AZ Models decals for this scheme, but found out their kit-supplied aircraft carrying the Freeman Type 3 insignia was for an aircraft that didn't exist, but discovered their aircraft number was off by one digit for an aircraft that served in the USAAF prior to transfer to the RAAF.

I found this kit challenging to build, as is typical of short-run kits, as there are no locating pins and each part requires careful test fitting and sanding to ensure good fit, most notable the multi-piece canopy.

I also used Accurate Miniatures 500lb bombs, as the kit-supplied photo-etch bomb fins were very difficult to assemble.

The kit is finished in Vallejo Model Air Curtiss Green/Curtiss Brown/Curtiss Gray, and weathered with a thinned acrylic burnt umber wash and Tamiya weathering pastels.
