This Canadian company has produced a very nice sheet to suit the newish Airfix kit of the Sabre. The decals are © 2019.
According to the spiel on the sheet, and I quote verbatim:
“ Italy operated 179 Canadair CL-13 Mk.IV/F-86Es from 1956 to 1976 which were then repainted from their ex-RAF Gray (sic)/Green livery to all aluminium. The CL-13 in Italian service corresponded to the F86 E-6 with an E 10 cockpit built by Canadair which the RAF referred to as the Mk 2 and then modified as the Mk 4 with a retrofit 6-3 wing.”
I am certainly not knowledgeable to counter any of this and presume the repaint took place when they arrived as all of these airframes are in aluminium.
They are beautifully printed with great colour density and featuring a bare whiff of clear trim to worry about. The background sheet is a pale blue which really helps identify the edges of each subject - I do not like decals printed on white sheets as my ageing eyes fail to pick some subjects out. Thank you Stormo!
The clear and well-written instructions fill both sides of an A4 sheet and each subject is illustrated with a colour port profile and a set of generic top and underside views at the rear of the sheet show the location of all decals and stencils and is very clearly marked. There is also an additional sheet giving the background to the system of application and some hints re the proprietary decal materials to use, although I do object to the use of ‘allot’ rather than ‘a lot’ ( but that is probably just me).
There are five subjects provided for, all in various shades of Aluminium, and all bar one with the 6-3 wing which had been retro-fitted to the aircraft sent to Italy in the late 1950s.
19404, 2-19 of 14o Gruppo, 2o Stormo, Novara-Camera AFB in 1958 with a red nose,
19664, 13-3 of 13o Gruppo, 2o Stormo, Novara-Camera AFB in 1958 with a green nose,
19523, 4-50 of 12o Gruppo, 4a Aerobrigata, Pratica di Mare AFB in 1959 with aluminium nose,
19573, 4-51 of 12o Gruppo, 4a Aerobrigata, Pratica di Mare AFB in 1959 with aluminium nose, and
19577, 4-84 of 12o Gruppo, 4a Aerobrigata, Grosetto AFB in 1960 with aluminium nose.
The first two have a crest on their fins depicting a mounted knight riding a cloud towards the sun, while the last three have a rearing stallion in black on a white shape in that place. Only the last is illustrated with underwing tanks but I would assume all carried this eat some time in service.
There are sufficient sets of lovely cockpit placards, wing-walks , stencils and roundels to build three complete aircraft.
This is a a very well produced decal sheet - highly recommended to the 1/72 modeller of this aircraft, nationality and era.
Thanks to Stormo Decals for the sample.
