Review Type: Two decal sheets; instructions.
Review Type: First Look
Advantages: Superbly printed set of markings for a significant example of the Phantom.
Disadvantages: The colour separation on the instruction sheet makes the pattern of greens a little hard to see and some may be put off by the price but quality does come with its own cost.
Conclusion: Highly recommended to the modeller interested in the Phantom or in display aircraft in general. These are also available in 1/48 and 1/32 scales.t.

FirstLook

Two decal sheets, one 95x135mm for the chequered tail markings and the other one 73x50mm for the insignia and national markings, are enclosed in a zip-lock bag, along with a double-sided A4 coloured instruction sheet.

The aircraft on the instruction sheet is 63-666 of the 57th Fighter Interception Squadron from the Iceland Defence Force in Keflavik during  ‘William Tell’ and was in the standard 3-colour “Vietnam” scheme of two greens and tan over light grey.

On the decal sheet the serial number is 63-618, but this aircraft does seem to share the same colours and other markings as 666.

On the colour instruction sheet the two greens are very close in tone to each other and I had to really peer at them to distinguish the pattern. Although most modellers interested in this set will probably know the pattern anyway I think that the sheet would benefit from a bit more colour separation. The colour guide gives paint colours in Humbrol, Xtracolour, Xtracryllix and Lifecolor as befits a British decal manufacturer.

The decals are superbly printed in a high gloss finish, beautiful register and density, and absolutely minimal carrier film. The quality of the unit badges and the Bicentennial marks are breath-taking, especially the gold “William Tell” arrow through the apple insignia on the fuel tanks. The modeller will need to spray the tail surfaces white before adding the chequered overlays. All this finery does come at a price, however, and the RRP of £13.95 might be considered by some to be a bit daunting, but you gets what you pays for as they say, and these are gorgeous.

Highly recommended to the modeller interested in the Phantom or in display aircraft in general. These are also available in 1/48 and 1/32 scales.
