Eduard's sliding canopy sections are moulded without quite enough bulge over the pilot's head.

Barracuda Studios has now addressed this issue with two new releases:

BR48458 - Fw 190 A, F, D Standard Sliding Hood

The first is the standard sliding canopy section in vacform plastic.

This is the flat version found on early and late-war examples.

The packaging is labelled Fw 190 A, F, D but it will be suitable for the Fw 190 G as well.

Fear not, gentle modeller. Vacform may seem scary but all the cutting lines for these canopies are straight so preparation will be fairly simple.

Barracuda's instructions recommend that you mask up to the cutting lines with Tamiya tape. I can also recommend using Dymo tape as a guide, as it is more rigid and less likely to allow the knife to cut or scratch the actual canopy if there is a slip-up during cutting. I usually cut the Dymo tape into thinner strips before application.

Furthermore, I pack my vacform canopies with Blu-Tack to prevent the thin vacform plastic from flexing while it is being cut.

Blu-Tack packing also makes it less likely to cut right through the plastic and slice your finger. Ask me how I know...

My sample had a few sticky specs on one side but these were quickly cleaned up with a fingertip.

The shape of the canopy looks good and it is very thin and clear.

BR48458 - Fw 190 A,F D Blown (Late) Sliding Hood

The second new release supplies the sliding canopy section for late-war Wurgers.

These are easily distinguished by the significant bulging of the canopy.

This version is commonly known as the blown canopy.

The blown canopy will be appropriate for late-war Fw 190 A, D, F and G Wurgers.

Each set contains a single sliding canopy section.

These are both straightforward, inexpensive and worthwhile improvements for almost any 1/48 scale Fw 190 kit.
