Exito Decals is a relatively new company that is building a reputation for thorough research and high quality frameable artwork.
Today I am examining their 1/48 scale Item No. ED48008 - 1:48 North American P-51D "Yoxford Girls". This covers three P-51D Mustang subjects.
The set comprises an A4 cover sheet plus three A4-sized glossy cardboard sheet in landscape formats. The front of each sheet features two side views of one aircraft and a brief description at the bottom of the page. These are high-quality frameable artworks.
The rear of each cardboard sheet offers upper plan view, scrap views, multiple historical photos, additional notes, colour callouts, references and assistance for decal placement.
The lovely illustrations are the work of Janusz Swiatlon.
The instructions call out Olive Drab and Neutral Grey as the camouflage colous, but there is also a strong argument for the use of RAF paint stocks. You can decide yourself!
Details of the three subjects are:
-
P-51D-5-NA, s/n 44-13712, flown by Capt. Robert W. Foy of 363rd FS / 357th FG, Leiston, UK, late July-early August 1944. This is finished in Dark Green upper surfaces and Grey below with striking "Passion Wagon" nose art and red/yellow 357th FG nose markings.
-
P-51D-5-NA, s/n 44-13691, flown by Lt. Arval J. Roberson of 362nd FS / 357th FG, Leiston, UK, early autumn 1944. This is finished in Dark Green upper surfaces and Grey below with lower surface invasion stripes and a white nose/spinner.
-
P-51D-20-NA, s/n 44-63629, flown by Lt. John A. Miller of 363rd FS / 357th FG, Leiston, UK, late spring 1945. This aircraft has never been covered in decal form until now. Overall bare metal with red rudder, with big "Shady Lady" nose art and red/yellow 357th FG nose markings.
The 357th FG nose marking decals are provided as red only and an option of red and yellow, depending on whether you want to paint the nose yellow to match the spinner.
The Cartograf decals are as well presented as you would expect with perfect registration and printing.
There is no shortage of high quality 1/48 scale Mustang kits around at the moment, with the pack currently being led by Eduard, so these newest Exito Decals will be a welcome way to customise the plastic pony of your choice.
Thanks to Exito Decals for the review sample
