Eduard's 1/48 scale
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa

by Brett Green

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa

Description

I have just finished building both kits included in the new Eduard 1:48 scale Spitfire Story package.

I have built one as an early Mk.I and the other has been converted to a Mk.IIa.

Here is my Spitfire Mk.IIa conversion.

The Mk.IIa is a very simple conversion. I used the Rotol propeller and spinner included in the kit and added a Coffman starter bulge to the forward fuselage. This was a spare resin part from the Red Roo Models Spitfire Mk.IIa conversion.

I also used parts from Barracudacal's Spitfire Mk.IX Snapshot Cockpit Upgrade. The main reason for this was that I wanted to depict the hydraulic undercarriage controller, and those parts are not included in the initial Eduard boxing. I also used the Yahu instrument panel (fits fine in the Eduard cockpit) and some additional wiring.

Decals for the Mk.IIa are from Southern Expo's "Hornchurch v Luftwaffe, Lean Into France", Item No. 48-002. I've been looking for an excuse to use these for nearly ten years!

Assembly was a pleasure. If you've built any of Eduard's 1:48 scale Spitfire Mk.VIII, IX or XVI releases you will know what to expect.

Excellent detail, great fit, world-leading surface texture - these are terrific kits. Grab the Spitfire Story package while you can!

I’ll be writing this one up for a detailed article in Issue 111 of Military Illustrated Modeller magazine.

Thanks to Eduard for the sample.
