Xtradecal continues its ambitious new release schedule with two new decal sheets for early RAF Harriers.

I am examining the first instalment in 1/48 scale focusing on Harrier GR.1 and GR.3 subjects. Eight subjects are covered.

A selection of finishes are available here - mainly variations on the 1970s camouflage of Dark Sea Grey and Dark Green upper surfaces over Light Aircraft Grey. A wraparound scheme is also included, as is an experimental winter camouflage scheme and a striking shark's mouth.

Details are as follows:

  • Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR.1, XV753, ‘53’ of the Harrier Operational Conversion Unit, RAF, RAF Wittering, 1970.

  • Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR.1A, XW745, ‘Blue 27’ of 233 Operational Conversion Unit, RAF, RAF Wittering, seen at RAF Woodford, 17 August, 1974.

  • Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR.3, XV762, ‘Blue 44’ of 233 Operational Conversion Unit, RAF, RAF Wittering, 25 Feburary, 1975.

  • Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR.1, XV787, ‘Red Alpha’ of 1 (F) Squadron, RAF, RAF Wittering, early 1970s.

  • Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR.3, XV793, ‘Yellow Romeo’ of 3 (F) Squadron, RAF, RAF Gutersloh, West Germany, 1970s

  • Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR.3, XV786, ‘Black Echo’ of IV (AC) Squadron, RAF, RAF Gutersloh, West Germany, March, 1975.

  • Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR.3, XV802, ‘Black X-Ray X-Ray’ of 20 (R) Squadron, RAF, RAF Wildenrath, West Germany, June, 1971.

  • Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR.3, XV787, ‘Red 02’, ‘Hot to Trot’ of 1 (F) Squadron, RAF, RAF Belize,Belize, 1975.

Instructions for the decal sheet are in full colour across one folded double-sided A4 and one double-sided A5 sheets.

Both side views plus upper and lower views are provided for all eight aircraft.

A selection of national markings is included.

Colour notes are offered, along with model paint callouts for Xtracolor enamels and Xtracrylix acrylics.

The decals are beautifully printed and feature thin carrier film.

This release will be very welcome for anyone planning to build the forthcoming Kinetic 1/48 scale Harrier GR.1, or who has the old Tamiya or Airfix kits stashed away. Personally though, I'll be waiting for the Kinetic kit!
