I remember when for years the only available model of the Sea Fury in 1/48 was the Falcon vacform kit. This was a lovely kit but required modellers to have some skill in vacform building in order to bring out best in this kit. Today we are spoiled for choice with the Trumpeter, AMG, Airfix and Hobbycraft releases of the Sea Fury.
Ronin Decals Australia has recently released a 1/48 scale decal sheet for the new Airfix Hawker Sea Fury FB.11. Two A5 screen printed decals sheets and a supplementary sheet containing squadron crests covers seven schemes for Royal Australian Navy Sea Fury’s flying from 1949 to 1963. The sheet covers several schemes that have not previously been available.
There are seven individual airframes to build from the sheet. These are:
-
Scheme 1 – VX-730/109 805 Sqn HMAS Sydney 1951 Korean War, currently on display at the Australian War Memorial – Grey and sky with red spinner, mission markings under the cockpit.
-
Scheme 2 – VX-726/101 850 Sqn HMAS Sydney 1951 Korean War - Grey and sky with grey spinner, mission markings under the cockpit.
-
Scheme 3 – WE676/138 HMAS Vengeance 1955 – grey and sky with a blue and white checked spinner.
-
Scheme 4 – VW645/109 805 Sqn HMAS Sydney 1955 – “Auster Killer” – grey and sky with a red spinner, Auster kill mark under the cockpit.
-
Scheme 5 – WH587/105 724 Sqn HMAS Albatross 1960 – grey and sky with kangaroo roundels.
-
Scheme 6 – WH588/114 805 late 1950s, The RAN Aerobatic display team – Overall silver with red trim.
-
Scheme 7 – WH588/114 & WH589 115 805 late 1960s, The RAN Aerobatic display team – Overall Oxford Blue
A comprehensive data set is also included with the decals. The instructions give BS standards for all paints which are easily sourced from major hobby paint suppliers.
These decals are extremely thin, and modellers are advised to read the instruction carefully in order to apply the decals correctly.
Decals are provided for two complete airframes, but this could be extended by supplement it with the kit decals.
