This is the 7th book in the Spotlight series and presents illustrations of the famous Grumman F-14 Tomcat, the American, twin-engine, two seater, and variable sweep-wing jet combat aircraft. The Tomcat was operational with the US Navy from 1970 to 2006 and remains in service with the Iranian Air Force after being exported to Persia before the fall of the Shah.
Marcelo Ribeiro has produced a publication based entirely around profiles and some top and bottom views of a number of F-14 aircraft. He covers most of the common variants and with the new burst of F-14 models, especially in 1/48 with the Tamiya and soon to be released AMK, many modellers will find this a most fitting volume to add to the reference shelf.
Marcelo has created 40 commissioned colour plan and profile views illustrating the different camouflage, colours and marking of various users. His illustrations bring a wonderful sense of what the aircraft really looked like in service. He has not only provided a widely varying number of colour schemes but has used reference photos to give the profiles the correct degree of weathering. Especially valuable is that there are 2 aircraft presented with both port and starboard profiles as well as top and bottom views which exhibit a great palette of mottle type weathering. These sets will be a real boon for the modeller looking for some guidance on painting and weathering their Tomcats.
This is an excellent book that will greatly assist modellers of the F-14 Tomcat, no matter the scale. I know I’ll be using it for the painting and weathering of my Tamiya/AMK Tomcats.
