The new Airfix Sea Fury is undoubtedly the best kit of the type in 1/48 scale, but it has some frustrating and unacceptable aspects. Several of these relate to the engine cowling.
On my kit, and everyone else I have heard about, the fairings over the exhasts are short shot. The moulding of the fasteners and the cowl panels on the sides of the cowling are softly moulded and the diameter of the completed cowl is slightky too small when matched to the fuselage.
Aerocraft Models is the brainchild of Alistair McLean, ex-Alley Cat Models, and his first release is a resin replacement cowling for the Airfix 1/48 scale Sea Fury.
This simple one-piece replacement addresses all the issues of the kit part. The recessed detail on the sides of the cowling is crisp and very fine, correctly depicting the panel line and three fasteners on each side. The extended exhaust fairings are also cast in place.
The resin part is cast onto a base via a thin circle of resin. This may be quickly removed using a razor saw.
The resin part also includes an arrow cast inside to indicate the top forward alignment.
This is a simple and worthwhile improvement to the Airfix 1/48 scale Sea Fury. I wish I'd had it when I was building mine!
Thanks to Aerocraft Models for the sample.
