The chin-mounted radiator is a prominent feature of any Hawker Typhoon model, especially if it’s been built from one of Airfix’s magnificent 1/24 kits.  And while the plastic parts Airfix provides for the radiator are very good, Radu Brinzan from RB Productions has released a photo-etched enhancement set that is several notches better.  I’ve included some photos of the etched and plastic parts side by side, and the former win hands-down in terms of detail.

The RB Productions set consists of four parts that have been etched from stainless steel:  two large ovals representing the water cooler elements, and two smaller, circular oil cooler faces.  Modellers scarred from grappling with the steel etch in some of Dragon’s old kits needn’t worry about similar experiences here.  No bending is required, and the attachment points between the etched parts and their surrounding fret are commendably thin.

Using the parts is straightforward – they are designed to attach directly to the equivalent kit parts (the front and back sections of the Typhoon’s radiator).  However anyone who’s tried to attach mesh screens to a model knows this can be tricky to do without glue smears, and the instructions provide some useful tips for avoiding this.

To see the set in action, take a look at Steve Budd’s excellent build of Airfix’s new 1/24 ‘Car Door’ Mk.Ib in the September 2016 edition of Airfix Model World magazine.  Steve uses the set in conjunction with Barracuda Studios’ 1/24 carburettor intake ring to achieve a very convincing radiator assembly for his model.

This set looks almost foolproof to use and will make a highly visible improvement to your big Typhoon model.

Highly Recommended.
