Eduard's 1/48 BRASSIN Bf 109 F Cockpit is available online from Squadron.com

Eduard's BRASSIN 1:48 scale Bf 109 F cockpit comprises 19 pieces in grey resin, four clear resin pieces, two photo-etched frets (one coloured, one clear), one clear acetate sheet, plus instructions.

The kit cockpit is very good, with sidewall detail moulded to the insides of the fuselage and colour photo-etched parts supplied for the instrument panel and harness straps. However, Eduard's BRASSIN cockpit really kicks it up a notch.

Casting quality is perfect on my sample. Cleanup is fairly straightforward as most parts are cast onto a resin strip, so a sharp knife and a swipe with a sanding stick is all that is required.

It is nice to see the ealy Bf 109 F seat included in this set (it isn't in the kit). This was a full seat with backrest that was similar to, but not the same as, the seat in the Bf 109 E. Check your references for specific aircraft though, as the G-style seat pan was fitted to later Bf 109 Fs.

The seat, breech covers and the cockpit tub are cast on to more substantial blocks. The seat and covers may be removed with a razor saw, and you'll need to spend a few minutes with sprue cutters, a knife and a razor saw to free the main cockpit part.

Alternative parts are supplied for the instrument panel (flat for the colour photo-etch or raised with a decal for instrument detail) and the breech covers.

Four clear parts are also included, but you won't need the Galland Panzer armoured glass for the Bf 109 F.

Colour photo-etched parts are supplied for the instrument panel, the harness straps and details.

A second brass photo-etched fret adds more details.

With the parts removed from their strips and blocks, assembly is very straightforward.

I particularly like the multi-part photo-etched rudder pedals with their resin actuators.

Moulded-on sidewall detail needs to be removed from the inside of the fuselage halves before the cockpit can be installed. When I installed my BRASSIN G-6 cockpit last year, I started off by grinding off the raised plastic detail with a cutting wheel fitted to my Dremel motor tool, followed by scraping with a hobby knife and finally sanding with a coarse sanding stick.

Eduard's Weekend Edition and Overtrees versions are particularly suited as donor kits for BRASSIN upgrades, as you won't be using most of the photo-etched parts of the ProfiPACK versions anyway and it will substantially reduce the cost of your project.  The Weekend Edition (no PE or masks) is less than USD$30, while the Overtrees (plastic sprues only - no decals or instructions) are less than USD$20 each!

I look forward to installing BRASSIN's cockpit in one of my Bf 109 F kits. The detail really is superb, and modellers with some experience working with resin shouldn't have any trouble fitting it.

It's nice to see the early F-style seat too.
