Tamiya's 1/48 scale Ki-61-Id is a fine kit. Detail is very good and the engineering of the kit permits a fast, precise and easy build.

The kit's exhaust stacks are supplied as one plastic piece per side incorporating the stacks and the covers. The limitations of injection moulding technology means that the ends of the exhaust stacks are solid, not hollow.
Getting in between the upper and lower covers to drill or carve out the ends of the plastic stacks would be a delicate operation requiring great care. I did not attempt it when I built my Tamiya Hien earlier this year.
Eduard has now addressed this issue with its 1/48 scale BRASSIN Ki-61-Id Exhaust Stack set. Each stack is supplied in one piece per side, but the resin exhaust stacks are meticulously hollowed out.

They don't come much easier than this - simply cut the exhausts from their casting strips and glue them in place. Instructions are included, but they are not really necessary.

This is a simple but worthwhile upgrade for your Tamiya 1/48 scale Ki-61-Id Hein.
Thanks to Eduard for the samples and images.
