Eduard's 1/48 Walrus Mk.I Updates are available online from Squadron.com
Don’t ask me why but I have always liked the shape of the Supermarine Walrus.
By the look of it, Airfix has now released what looks to be the ultimate example of this aircraft.
I suspect that Eduard had a pre-release example of this kit for quite some time as they have released not one but four updates for this new Airfix kit.
Eduard Item No. 48929 - Walrus Mk.I Exterior Update
The first is for the exterior of the aircraft. A little over 114 photo etch parts are included on a medium sized fret. The etch shows great fidelity in detail and is very fine in places.
The update include a wiring harness for the engine, updates for the front external hatch, machined gun upgrades , various external hatches and four very well done bomb racks.
A precise and well-drawn instruction sheet rounds off this update.
Eduard Item No. 49848 - Walrus Mk.I Interior Update
The second update concerns itself with the interior of the aircraft and over 160 parts are included on one small (pre painted ) fret and one large (brass fret).
I was again taken back by the fidelity of detail included in this update, I must confess it’s been well over 10 years since I have reviewed an Eduard update and I must say the detail on their etch has improved immensely.
The smaller etched fret comes in a pre-painted form and covers the instrument panel, which is multi coloured, and better than anything I could ever possibly paint. The printing on the dials for instance is crisp and very well defined.
The rest of this fret is unpainted and updates the seat and pedal assemblies.
The larger fret is in the traditional brass colour and basically updates everything that is over scale within the interior itself.
Stand out items included on this fret include the two mid mounted fuselage side windows that allows you to position these in the open position if you wish; a very well done winch; internal bracing for the machine gun positions and a host of other internal fittings that may or may not be seen on your finished model.
Eduard Item No. FE 849 - Walrus Mk.I Seatbelts
The third set is of the pre-painted variety and covers four seat belts.
The coloured printing on these is first class and the brass thin enough to be bent into subtle curves easily.
Eduard BRASSIN Item No. 648 343 - Walrus Mk.I “Brassin” Resin Wheels
The last update is from Eduard’s “BRASSIN” resin update range is quite honestly a corker. Included is a small photo-etched fret for the wheel spokes and in resin, and a tool to bend the etch into too the correct convex shape.
The set also includes two resin wheels. These are masterfully done. Not only do they include beautiful sidewall detail but also a very subtle flat spot at the base of the wheel itself.
Wheel covers are included if you wish to display the wheels without the spokes being exposed.
All of the sets include very well drawn an precise instructions.
Any or all of these sets will lend additional high quality detail to the new Airfix 1/48 scale Walrus.
Thanks to Eduard for the samples and images.
