Vickers Valiant
by Roland Sachsenhofer
Hobby Boss' 1/48 Fw 190 V18 is available online from Squadron.com for only $36.99!
Being the first of the “V-bombers”, the Valiant displays classic and pleasing forms. Not as advanced and ambitious as the Vulcan and the Victor, the Valiant represented nevertheless state of the art in jet-bomber design in the late 40s/ beginning 50s.
It was a Valiant which dropped Britain’s first atomic bomb in 1956–and this type was the first of the V-bombers to drop their bomb load in anger during the Suez crisis.
The Valiants career as atomic bomber was cut short by material fatigue suffered during low level high-speed flying. As soon as in the middle of the 60s the Valiant bomber fleet was withdrawn from service.
The kit is “great” in all respects; Airfix captures the appealing shapes of the Valiant in a convincing way. Parts layout and their good fit make the build to a joyful and rather straight forward experience. Only subject of increased work with putty and sanding paper is the tail fin; a tricky arrangement of fin and elevator causes a little amount of extra work.
Aside this this Valiant kit provides pure modelling pleasure –and results in a quite big and impressive model in your show case!
