This new Xtradecal decal set is perfectly timed for the soon-to-be-released Airfix 1/72 scale He 111 H-6 kit (due next month), although it will obviously suit kits by Hasegawa, Italeri, and Revell’s re-boxes of both brands (however, be aware Revell also re-boxed the old Frog kit).

And for those who like to put lipstick on pigs, there are kits by Matchbox, Frog, Lindberg and Airfix’s original 1963 release (re-boxed by MPC).

The Decals

The decals are supplied in Xtradecal’s usual polythene zip-lock bag. The instructions are very nicely produced in colour, and clearly indicate markings placement. A brief note regarding the aircraft and its station location is given for each subject, and in several cases along with details of the reference used to base the drawings on.

Several machines include a note to say that the W.Nr. used is fictitious (as obviously it could not be determined from photos), but is included as a W.Nr. marking on the lower tailfin is expected to be present.

Others mention the type of propellers fitted, and things such as external bomb-racks.

A list of Xtracolor and Xtracrylix paint codes is also provided for the colours required, as well as their RLM codes.

The specific subjects covered are:

  • H-5 or H-6, 1B+OH, Wekusta, 5 Spitzbergen, 1941;

  • H-5 or H-6, 1G+KL, 3/KG27, Poltawa, 1942;

  • H-5y, A1+AH, 1st Staffel, Russia 1942/3;

  • H-6, 1H+IK, 2/KG26, Bardufuss, Norway, Fw Otto Beau, ship victories on rudder;

  • H-6, 1H+GP, 6/KG26, Italy, 1943, white engines, rudder and fuselage band;

  • H-6, 1H+BB, Stab 1/KG26, Bardufoss, Norway, 1942, Maj Werner Klumper;

  • H-6, G1+DC, Steb II/KG55, France, 1942, Lt Thross;

  • H-6, 5J+ER, 7/KG4, Nth Africa, 1942;

  • H-6, 6N+DG, Stab V/KG 100, Kalamaki, 1942; and

The decals appear superbly printed with excellent colour density and registration. The sheet reviewed here covers ten options; some of which are quite colourful, and all interesting in my opinion.
