Advantages:

Interesting and colourful subjects; well researched and presented instructions; high quality decals.

Disadvantages:

Conclusion:

This release maintains the high standards Thundercals established with its first two Pacific Theatre P-47 releases. The combination of camouflaged and natural metal finishes, white theatre identification markings, colourful engine cowls and finely executed (and in one case slightly risqué) nose art should see these decals appeal to a wide audience. Highly recommended.

Thundercals has introduced Part 4 of their Thunderbolt range, this time depicting schemes for five Republic P-47D Thunderbolt Razorbacks serving in the Pacific Theatre of Operation in the 19th and 333rd Fighter Squadron of the 318th Fighter Group “Pineapple Air Force” of the United States Air Force.

The decals are superbly printed by Cartograf of Italy with good colour saturation and excellent register.  The carrier film is ultra thin and my experience with the Cartograf decals that I have used in the past is that the decals have to be handled carefully and snuggle down into the surface detail well.  The carrier film then almost totally disappears under a coat of clear.

Markings are provided for five aircraft as follows:

  • P-47D-20-RA 325434 “Jeanie/G Nee” flown by Major Henry McAfee (Commanding Officer) of the 19th FS, 318th FG of the USAF based at Oahu, Hawaii in June 1944.  The aircraft is finished in Olive Drab upper surfaces and Neutral Grey under surfaces with a bare metal engine cowl and fin with ANA501 Blue trim.

  • P-47D-21-RA 325657 “Dan’l Boone” flown by Captain Daniel Boone of the 333rd FS, 318th FG of the USAF based at Aslito (Isley) Field Saipan in July 1944.  The aircraft is finished in natural metal with an ANA506 yellow engine cowl front fuselage, fin and wing tip trim.

  • P-47D-20-RA 325408 “Smokepole” flown by Lt Hal Dunning and Lt Doug Towner of the 19th FS, 318th FG of the USAF based at Aslito (Isley) Field Saipan in 1944.  The aircraft is finished in Olive Drab upper surfaces and Neutral Grey under surfaces with a bare metal engine cowl and fin with ANA501 Blue trim.

  • P-47D-20-RA 325321 “Cockpit Trouble/Rascal III” of the 333rd FS, 318th FG of the USAF based at Aslito (Isley) Field Saipan in June 1944.  The aircraft is finished in Olive Drab upper surfaces and Neutral Grey under surfaces with a bare metal engine cowl and fin with ANA506 yellow engine cowl front fuselage, fin and wing tip trim.

  • P-47D-20-RA 325327 “Big Squaw” flown by Captain John Vogt of the 19th FS, 318th FG of the USAF based at Aslito (Isley) Field Saipan in 1944.  The aircraft is finished in Olive Drab upper surfaces and Neutral Grey under surfaces with a bare metal engine cowl and fin with ANA501 Blue trim.

The instruction sheet is nicely printed in colour giving good decal placement details.

Thanks to Thundercals for the sample
