Eduard's 1/48 IRIS-T Missiles are available online from Squadron.com
The IRIS-T (Infra Red Imaging System Tail) is a German led program to develop a replacement for the AIM-9 Sidewinder that is used by NATO member nations. Aircraft that are capable of firing the Sidewinder are capable of firing the IRIS-T missile.
The program is a collaboration with Greece, Norway, Italy, Sweden and Spain.
The missile has been designed to have a higher resistance to flare and ECM resistance. The missile can discriminate between targets far better that the Sidewinder allowing it a longer head on distance firing range. The missile can also launch ‘over the shoulder’ where the target is behind the firing aircraft. This is possible through the use if its vectored thrust nozzle allowing turns of 60g and direction changes of 60 degrees/s.*
Two complete missiles and launchers are supplied in this set. The main body of the missile and primary flight wings are moulded as a single part while the rocket motor and rear guidance wings are separate parts. A clear seeker head is supplied. The option of a seeker cover is provided should you wish to have your model in a parked configuration.
Two launcher rails are supplied. One is an LAU-129 for use on an F-16. The alternative is a Lavett RB99 for use with the Gripen. The visible difference between the two is the mounting lugs supplied on the later. A small PE piece is applied to the rear of the launcher rail.
The instructions are standard Eduard layout with suggested colours from the Mr Color/Gunze Aqueous range.
Plenty of stencil decals are supplied to busy up the completed missile.
I’m a fan of modern aircraft and it’s great to see them getting some attention by way of these fantastic Brassie ordnance sets from Eduard. They’re simple to build and paint and add some welcomed business to a kit that can sometimes be a overlooked from the kit manufacturer. These weapon sets are certainly welcome in my books. Recommended.
Thanks to Eduard for the samples and images.
