Aviaeology’s superbly researched and presented decal sets typically feature aircraft that have been operated by Canada’s armed forces, such as Hurricanes, Typhoons, Liberators and Beaufighters.  These markings are complemented by a separate series of airframe stencil and data decals, which while less spectacular than Aviaeology’s signature decals are also well researched and designed to add a final touch of authenticity to your model.

The 1/32 Beaufighter stencil/data decals being considered here are typical of the series.  They will go a long way towards refining the appearance of any model built from the 1970s-era Revell kit, which is the only Beaufighter available in this scale.  However like most of the other stencils in the series, they are also available in 1/72 and 1/48 scales.

The stencils are printed on a 10 x 14 cm (5 ½ and 4 inch) sheet and are clearly legible.  Print quality appears to be perfect.  Carrier film has been kept to a minimum, which is welcome given the propensity for stencil decals to silver.

As with all Aviaeology releases, the instructions are the highlight.  Don’t be deceived by the comparatively small black and white illustrations:  they and the accompanying text contain a wealth of information.  This is presented clearly with no doubt left as to the correct location of each stencil.  The instructions also point out known and suspected variations in stencil application, and inconsistencies in sources that warrant further research.

The instructions are rounded off with a 12-step guide to applying Aviaeology decals, that includes suggestions about surface preparation and finishing, paint and decal drying time and appropriate setting solutions.
