Airfix's 1/24 scale Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib will be available online from Squadron

Description

Here is my 1/24 scale Airfix Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib.

What a great kit this is ! I built it using only Brett’s book as a guide, very helpful and it made me wonder how they were able to build the kit without it!!

The full build is in Scale Modelling Now.

This kit’s interior is so detailed that one should leave it open, otherwise it is a bit of a pyramid, with a golden inside.

However I, like a lot of people, I imagine, like the look of the aircraft closed up.

The kit was therefore built up in full, photographed in detail and then ravaged.

The assembled interior does not allow for the panels to be installed as you probably know well by now. It took a pair of side cutters to remove enough of the inside detail to get the panels to seat comfortably.

So, no erk is going to do anything but have a heart attack when removing the panels!

Painting

There are not many colour images of the Typhoon that came to hand but such as there are show that the Typhoon underwent considerable weathering.

This usually involved ingrained dust, wear due to mechanics climbing over it and and the effects of being left outside for weeks on end.

None of these photos shoed shaded panel lines.

I undercoated the whole airframe with a “dusty “ light brown mix. Once I had applied the camouflage I used a sanding pad that was just a shade rougher than a pure polishing stick.

I rubbed the paint back until a certain amount of the brown showed through. This gave a more durable dusty finish compared to a thin coat sprayed overall.

The rest was just a case of looking at the reference and using oils acrylics applied and blended with a soft brush. Powders and graphite were rubbed on with my faithful finger.

It all took a long time but then I don’t do more than a couple of hours at a time so the build was spread over three months in all. But I really enjoyed it.
