I reviewed the 1/48 Eduard MiG-21R on Hyperscale back in February of 2014. As you can read the original article here, I won’t be giving a blow by blow account of what this kit features though I’ve included the original sprue photos for that kit.

In this review we'll look at the Weekend edition of the same kit. Keeping in mind the review of the Profipack edition, we'll take a quick look at what options are available in this edition.

The instruction manual for starters hints at the 'budget' value that weekend edition kits are aimed at. The manual is an unbound A4 booklet printed on standard bond paper. There's no glossy build manual in this kit. The sprue layout in the manual shows a significant numbers of parts greyed out with most of them being on the ordnance sprues. Gone are the etch sets and paint masks but what is supplied is a set of pre painted paper seat belts. Pre-painted paper seat belts are one of Eduard’s more recent addition to their line of products. The belts feature fully painted harness, buckles and fasteners. I do think these paper seats have a munch better appearance to the etch variety as they can be moulded and folded into a much more convincing shape than the pre painted etch version.

The sprues are identical to those supplied in the Profipack edition.

Markings

Two schemes are provided. Both of these were available in the Profipack edition. They are:

  1. MiG-21R, 263rd OAETR, Kabul Air Base, Afghanistan, 1982 (Black green/tan over light blue)

  2. MiG-21R, Cuban Air Force, 80’s-90’s

Minimum airframe marking are supplied with fin flashes, national insignia and aircraft numbers the most prominent. It appears that the only stencils are supplied for the type D and type R reconnaissance pods. Minimal stencils are supplied. Decals are printed in house by Eduard and have minimal and very thin carrier film

Colour callouts are provided for Mr Color.

Conclusion

Keeping the economical modeller in mind, Eduard continues to keep their kits at the affordable end of the modelling budget.

This is still a really nice kit even without the bells and whistles.

Happily recommended.

Thanks to Eduard for the sample
