Xtradecal's 1/72 scale DH.82a Tiger Moth Pt.1 is available online from Squadron.com
It’s no surprise that Xtradecal should release some markings options to coincide with Airfix’s release of their new-tool Douglas C-47 kit. The C-47served with a wide variety of operators, and offers the possibility of many different colour schemes. As is apparent from the title, this sheet covers international usage.
The markings provided will obviously suit any brand of C-47 kit in 1/72-scale, which aside from Airfix’s new C-47 kit (their third), includes Airfix’s 1960 tooling, plus releases by Esci and Italeri. Esci’s kit was re-boxed by AMT/Ertl, and once in 1986 by Revell; whist Italeri’s was re-boxed by Airfix (in 2001), Revell and Flying Kiwis. So there are plenty of C-47 kit options to garnish with this Xtradecal release; Italeri’s tooling being the most commonly encountered.
The Decals
The decals are supplied in Xtradecal’s usual A5 polythene zip-lock bag. The instructions are nicely produced in colour, and clearly indicate markings placement.
A brief note regarding the aircraft and its station location is given for each subject. Unsurprisingly, a list of Xtracolor paint codes is also provided for the colours required. The decals look to be superbly printed and with excellent colour density.
The set reviewed here covers seven options; all of which are quite appealing in my opinion. The subjects are:
-
French Navy 41-18487/87 Escadrille 56.S 1968, natural metal;
-
German AF 26989 14-01 1967, camouflaged, now at Deutches Museum;
-
Swedish AF 79008 13 Wing/78, Malmen 1978, camouflaged;
-
Swedish AF 13 Wing/73, overall natural metal;
-
NASA’s N817NA in overall white;
-
Argentinean AF TC-34, Falklands, 1982, camouflaged; and
-
Canadian AF No.927, natural metal, preserved at the Alberta Aviation Museum.
These are superbly produced decals, and represent excellent value in my opinion. They provide some interesting options for any brand of 1/72 C-47 kit, but are nicely timed to coincide with Airfix’s new-tool release. I highly recommend them.
Highly recommended.
