Last year's 1/32 Junkers Ju 88 A-4 kit from Revell followed up the company's original and highly regarded  Ju 88 A-1 release from 2008.  The A-4 kit contains markings for two aircraft:

  • S4+ML of 3/Ku.Fl.Gr. 506 based at Leeuwarden, Netherlands in 1942 and camouflaged in RLM 70 Black Green and RLM 71 Dark Green over RLM 65 Light Blue, and
  • B3+AM of 4/KG 54 based at Catania, Sicily in 1943 and finished in RLM 79 Sand Yellow over RLM 65, with RLM 70 and white stripes on the upper surfaces and RLM 70 scribble on the undersurfaces.

Both are good marking options but given the extent of Ju 88 deployment during World War II, and the ensuing range of camouflage schemes employed, further marking choices will always be welcome.  These two Ju 88 A-4 decal sets from EagleCals provide additional variety for those contemplating the Revell kit, and have also been released in 1/48 and 1/72 to cater for Ju 88 modellers in these scales.

Each set features three Ju 88 A-4s as follows:

EC#153

  • W.Nr. unknown/9K+FR, operated by III./KG 51, location and date not provided.  This and the following Ju 88 were camouflaged in RLM 70 Black Green and RLM 71 Dark Green over RLM 65 Light Blue, with fuselage band and lower wingtips and engine cowls in RLM 04 Yellow.
  • W.Nr.140711/4D+AC, flown by Hauptmann Siegmund-Ulrich Freiherr von Gravenreuth of II./KG 30 and based at Petsamo, Finland in April 1942.
  • W.Nr. unknown/F1+BR, operated by 7./KG 76 and based at Armawir, Russia in October 1942.  This aircraft was also finished in 70/71 over 65, with the upper surface colours overpainted with white distemper; there were two RLM 04 fuselage bands.

EC#154

  • W.Nr. unknown/B3+IN, operated by 5./KG 54, summer 1941.  The 70/71 over 65 finish of B3+IN was modified by a heavy application of black distemper over the undersurface colour.
  • W.Nr. unknown/L1+MH, operated by 1./LG 1 and based at Eleusis, Greece in December 1941.  The upper surfaces of this machine were overall RLM 79 Sand Yellow, overpainted with blotches of RLM 80 Green; undersurfaces were originally RLM 78 Blue, overpainted with black distemper.
  • W.Nr. unknown/9K+QH, operated by 1./KG 51 and based at Sarabuz, Russia in June 1942.  This was another colourful 70/71 over 65 aircraft, with RLM 04 lower cowls, lower wing tips and fuselage band.

As usual from EagleCals, the instructions are comprehensive.  Each scheme is illustrated by full colour port or starboard profile, overhead plan view and underwing scrap view.  Three view black and white line drawings are also provided to assist with stencil placement.

The illustrations are backed up by a text description of each aircraft and its unit (to the extent this is known) and key points of camouflage and markings.  References are provided for anyone who wants to undertake further research.

The decals have been produced to a high standard.  Each of the four review sheets has been perfectly printed, with good colour density and registration.  There is a large amount of clear carrier film on some of the fuselage code decals, so you’ll want to make sure your surface is nice and glossy.  The Hakenkreuz decals have been printed in two parts, but the split has been cleverly designed to minimise the risk of misalignment.
