Review Type:

First Look.

Advantages:

Very good quality, interesting and attractive markings that appear to be well researched.

Disadvantages:

Only a single profile view of each scheme.

Conclusions:

This package appears to be well researched with decals produced to the highest standards. It offers a choice of interesting schemes, with some that are just a bit unusual in some cases. The lack of plan views and starboard profiles can probably be forgiven, such is the excellent value for the number of options provided - Recommended.

Messerschmitt’s Bf 110 is a favourite of mine, so I was pleased to see this release now that we have the superlative Eduard series kits to garnish in The One True Scale.

The decals and their instructions come packaged in a zip-lock A-5 sized plastic bag, along with a folded A-4 sheets for instructions. The production quality of the decal appears to be excellent (I believe that Fantasy Printshop does the printing).

The instructions are printed nicely in colour with a single profile for each subject. There are no plan views; instead, the instructions advise you to refer to your kit’s painting & markings guide. This is perhaps a bit of a cop-out, but most will cope with suitable references for standard splinter patterns. The one exception is for a machine where the RLM 65 under-surfaces wrap around the wing leading edge; in this case, the outer third of one wing is illustrated. I suspect the absence of plan views, and each scheme’s starboard profile for that matter, is a cost cutting measure. With twenty-two schemes and national insignia sufficient for three airframes, at this price, I think AIMS can probably be forgiven.

RML colour codes are used for the painting guide as would be expected. The research appears to be thorough, and the accompanying notes to each scheme include mention of research references. There are also various small detail notes and advice where conjecture has been employed.

The twenty-two schemes offered are:

  • Bf 110 C flown by:

    • Gruppenadjutant Stab I./ZG 76 Oblt. Hans Jäger, Poland 1939.

    • Kommandeur I./ZG 76 Hptm. Günther Reinecke, 1939, Warsaw-Okecie.

    • Hptm. Günther Reinecke, but this time during the Battle for France.

    • Oberslt. Huth, France, May 1940.

    • Hptm Wilhelm Makrocki, I./ZG 26 Gruppenkommodore .

    • Bf 110 C-4 flown by I Gruppe Adjudant Oblt. Rudiger Proske, Kent, 1940.

    • Oberslt. Huth, France, May 1940.

    • Hptm Johann Schalk's of III./ZG 26

    • Geschwaderkommodor Oberst Johann Schalk.

    • Schalk's adjutant (see above).

    • II./ZG 26 Gruppen Adjutant.

    • Makrocki of I./ZG 26s Makrocki, Athens, May 1941 (either a Bf 110 C or E).

    • II./NJG 1 Gruppen Adjudant Oblt. Kellenbeck, Schleswig 1941

  • Bf 110 E flown by:
    • Hptm Herbert Kaminski of I./ZG 26, Poland, 1941.

    • Hptm Wilhelm Spies, Russia 1942.

  • Bf 110 G-2 flown by:
    • Hermann Kodat of Stab./ ZG 26, Uetersen 1944.

    • Belonging to Stab./ ZG 26. 1944

    • Stab IV./NJG 6, 1944 Romanian/Bulgarian border.

    • NJG 1's Geschwaderkommodore Major Hans-Joachim Jabs. 1944 Germany.

    • IV./NJG 6s Gruppenkommandeur Hauptmann Martin 'Tino' Beckers,' Neubiberg 1944.

    • IV./NJG 1's Gruppenkommandeur Helmut Lent, Leeuwarden 1943.

    • NJG 3 Kommodore Major Helmut, 1943

AIMS cover quite a number of interesting subjects in their decal range, plus provide some PE and resin sets too.
