Review Type: |
First Look. |
Advantages: |
Superb quality, detail and scale finesse. |
Disadvantages: |
No colour guide or illustration of the ignition wiring provided (but easily remedied).. |
Conclusions: |
These are stunningly good resin representations of the three engines concerned. They have superb detail, incredibly fine small parts, excellent scale finesse, and are produced to the highest standards. They are just the thing to add a real lift to quite a number of pre-1914 and WW1 subjects - Simply exquisite, and highly recommended. |

The Company
Small Stuff produces some truly outstanding stuff. In fact, they make what I consider to be the best all-resin aircraft kit I have ever reviewed, this being their Sukhoi I-14, the subject of a “First Look” here on HyperScale in May 2013. They also offer a range of 1/72-scale engines, three of which I shall review here, as well as some 1/144-scale detail and conversions sets for the Tu 134 and Tu-154 that are also very nice.
I would encourage readers to check out their website and support this company, as I rank them amongst the best resin producers whose products I have seen.
The parts and instructions for each engine kit come in small a re-sealable bag attached to card header, with the parts further divided between two inner bags. The instructions provide a parts map and clear diagrams covering assembly.
There is also a list of aircraft that used the engine concerned.
- Orberursel U.I. (100-hp):
- Fokker D.II, D.V, E.II, & E.III
- Pfalz E.II & E.III.
- Gnome 7 Omega (50-hp):
- Blériot XI
- Deperdussin B
- Farman-IV
- Morane-Saulnier G
- Nieuport IV
- Sikorsky S-16
- Gnome Monsoupape 9B2 (100-hp):
- Anatra Anade
- Avro 504K
- Airco DH.2
- Bristol Scout
- Grigorovich M-5
- Morane-Saulnier L
- Nieuport 10
- R.A.F. F.E.8
- Sopwith Baby
- Sopwith Pup & 1½ Strutter
- Vickers F.B.5
The parts are beautifully cast on easily removed pour stubs. They are amongst the best resin casting that I can recall seeing, and include some very small and incredibly fine pieces. A nice touch is that all parts are clearly numbered on their pour stubs, akin to mainstream injected kit sprue numbering. The parts consist of a crankcase, separate cylinders, inlet manifold pipes, and exhaust valve pushrods and rockers; and would you believe separate spark plugs as well?! I have used Small Stuff’s website images, as my photography cannot better them.
The only things missing are a colour guide and an illustration of the ignition wiring, but suitable references are easily found, so these are of little consequence.
