Eduard’s Mig-21R Brassin cockpit set would do well as a stand alone model. The amount of detail that has been jammed into such a confined space is remarkable. It’s a testament to the exceptional 3D CAD work their design team performs. Every switch, panel and dial has had the detail treatment in this set. Optional items such as either a full pre-painted or resin face panel are nice details. The latter gives you some leeway in brewing up your own colours for the interior.
The cockpit tub is a made up of the floor and side walls which should help with detail painting. The rear wall can be added separately and added to the cockpit tub later in the construction process. Photo etch panels are used as overlays for the resin on the side walls which will add some relief detail to this area.
Alternate control panels for the reconnaissance pod are also provided for the overhead panel. The well detailed forward coaming is replaced by a resin item with the radar scope supplied as a separate item. The 22 piece KM-1 ejection seat is beautifully detailed with separately cast seat frame, headrest, cushion, and armrests. The seat belts are pre-painted etch however the Eduard KM-1 cloth seatbelts that I reviewed last year may be used here to replace the kit item.
The finishing touches are found around the lip of the cockpit frame with the canopy seal and locking mechanism being a photo etched part. A nice inclusion in the set is what appears to be a Russian ZSH-5 pilots helmet with ear muffs. The helmet resting on the sill of the open canopy and an aftermarket crew access ladder would really set a model off.
In terms of detail Eduard has gone to town on this set and it shows just how know about the subject. Though it will be a fiddly item to piece together the time invested in detail painting and presentation will turn this cockpit set into a real gem. The addition of the pilot’s helmet is a nice addition. Most definitely recommended.
Thanks to Eduard for the samples and images.
