Review Type:

First Look.

Advantages:

Good scale finesse and good quality.

Disadvantages:

Imprecise location provided for mounting the beaching gear on the floats. No colour call-outs provided.

Conclusions:

This is a handy set, especially with regard to the beaching gear’s potential to add interest to floatplane model. The instructions are a little vague as to exactly where to locate the beaching gear on the floats. The cockpit detail is quite comprehensive, but requires a replacement vac-form canopy, preferably modelled open, to do it full justice.

Recommended.

This is a handy detail set for the Brengun Spitfire Mk.Vb Floatplane; a kit that I reviewed here on HyperScale recently.

The set comes in a cellophane bag stapled to a card header, and includes instructions plus a transparency for the PE instrument panels. The instructions are easy to follow, and the PE fret and resin parts are of good quality. The lack of colour call-outs is a minor inconvenience, but is easy to overcome for the cockpit at least.

This review’s images are from Brengun’s website. They illustrate the PE and resin parts in situ on their intended kit.

The PE fret supplies a quite comprehensive amount of replacement and additional cockpit detail; although much of it will be hard to see given the small cockpit opening and the kit’s closed canopy. However, it will prove more worthwhile with an aftermarket vac-form canopy, especially if modelled open.

The real benefit of this set is the provision of the beaching gear, which is a combination of four resin wheels, eight resin prongs to insert into the floats, and PE handles. The instructions advise approximately where to drill the wholes for each float, but could have been more precise. There is also the benefit of a boarding ladder. This and the beaching gear will certainly add interest to the displayed model.
